Early Phase
Byju is an Engineer by degree and worked for a UK-Based shipping firm and during his work breaks he appeared for CAT exam with no preparation and scored 100 percentile. That time his friends started encouraging him to teach and help them to prepare for the CAT exam and he started helping them out. At that time there were only 35 students in his 1st class and it reached out to 1200 in his 6th class, which was a massive increase in students. So, he left his job and started full-time teaching.

Launching Byju’s — The Learning App

He started expanding, and travelled multiple cities to reach out more students and then he launched video based lectures of CAT through VSAT. Byju’s major goal was to make students fall in love with learning. He launched Think and Learn Pvt. Ltd. in 2011 with a focus on K-12 segment. It started getting bigger and better. They spent around four years to create high-quality, comprehensive content. He covered multiple grades and subjects and launched Byju’s — The Learning App in 2015.

Getting Funds and Expansion

In our education system where students are made to solve questions and not to ask , Byju’s made learning creative and addictive, so that students start falling in love with learning. Byju’s mission is to help students to make them better and a lifelong learner which excited Mark Zuckerberg to invest in Byju’s. And in 2016, Byju’s raised $50 million(Around 333 Crores) from Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative and it was their first and only investment in Asia. There are four more partners of Byju’s which are Sequoia, Sofina, Lightspeed, and Times Internet.

Byju’s witnessed 100 percent growth in three consequtive years and in 2019 they made a massive growth of 200 percent. In 2018 company achieved a major milestone when they received funding from Tencent and BCCL and became 11th unicorn company with a valuation of more than $1 billion.

Huge Numbers and Results

When students started getting better results from Byju’s App as compared to students learning in coaching classes, more parents started believing in Byju’s and that is why the renewal rate of 80% is witnessed every year and this is the reason there are more than 35 million free users and 2.7 million paid users on the app.
Byju’s started doubling its numbers every seven to eight months and in FY’19(Fiscal Year 2019), the revenue generated by the company is 1300 crore and expecting a revenue of 3000 crore in FY’20. 
Byju’s made learning fun and this solved the major gap in the education system, where students have fear for exams. Byju changed their mindset and it increased the love for learning and used technology for the betterment of students and not just making them lethargic.
